PS5 and Xbox Series X HDMI Port Repair: No Signal, Flickering, and Loose Ports

HDMI port on a games console motherboard ready for repair

Your PS5 or Xbox Series X powers on, the light is on, the fan is spinning, but the TV says no signal. Or the picture flickers every time someone walks past. Nine times out of ten, the problem is the console's HDMI port, and it's one of the most common console repairs we do at our Emu Plains workshop.

The good news: a damaged HDMI port doesn't mean a new console. The port can be removed and a new one soldered onto the motherboard, usually for a fraction of the cost of replacing the console.

Signs your HDMI port is damaged

  • No signal or a black screen while the console powers on normally
  • Picture cuts out or flickers when the cable is touched or moved
  • Green or purple tint, sparkles, or "snow" on the screen
  • Sound but no picture
  • The cable feels loose, wobbles, or won't push all the way in
  • Pins inside the port look bent, flattened, or missing, or the port has been pushed into the console

Rule out the easy fixes first

Before booking a repair, spend five minutes checking these. It could save you a trip.

  1. Swap the cable. Use the HDMI cable that came with the console, or another Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. Cheap or old cables are a common cause of flickering at 4K and 120Hz.
  2. Try another TV input or another TV. A faulty TV port causes the same symptoms.
  3. PS5: change video output in Safe Mode. Turn the console off, then hold the power button until you hear a second beep (about seven seconds). Connect your controller with a USB cable, press the PS button, and choose Change Video Output.
  4. Xbox Series X: start in low-resolution mode. With the console off, hold the Xbox button and the Eject button together until you hear a second beep. The console starts at a low resolution you can change in settings.

If none of this brings the picture back, or you can see damage inside the port, it's time for a repair.

Why console HDMI ports break

The HDMI port is soldered to the surface of the motherboard by small pads. It's strong enough for normal use, but it isn't designed to take sideways force. We see the same causes over and over:

  • Moving the console with the cable still plugged in. Picking up a PS5 to dust behind the TV is the classic one.
  • Cables pulled tight. A cable stretched across to the TV, or a foot catching it, puts all that tension on the port.
  • Knocks to a vertical console. A PS5 standing upright can tip, and the cable acts like a lever on the port.
  • Heavy adapters and stiff cables hanging off the back of the console.
  • Plugging in at an angle, which bends the pins over time.
  • Power surges, which can damage the small HDMI chip next to the port even when the port itself looks perfect.

Is it the port or the HDMI chip?

If the port looks fine but there's still no signal, the chip that drives the HDMI signal may be faulty. That's why we never guess. We inspect the port under a microscope, test the signal path on the board, and tell you what's actually wrong before we quote. With our no fix, no fee policy, you don't pay for a repair we can't complete.

How we repair an HDMI port

  1. Strip the console down to the motherboard.
  2. Remove the damaged port with controlled hot air and flux, without overheating nearby components.
  3. Clean the pads and check every trace under the microscope. If a pad has lifted, we rebuild the connection.
  4. Solder a new HDMI port in place and inspect every pin.
  5. Reassemble and test on a TV at full resolution, with the console running a game to make sure the signal is stable.

Most HDMI port replacements are finished the same day, and every repair comes with our 12-month warranty. See PS5 HDMI port repair and Xbox Series X HDMI repair for details.

Why it's not a DIY job

A console HDMI port has 19 pins packed onto tiny pads, sitting on a motherboard designed to pull heat away fast. Without the right tools, it's very easy to lift a pad, bridge two pins, or cook a nearby chip, and a cheap port swap becomes a dead console. If you've already had a go, bring it in anyway. We repair plenty of DIY attempts.

How to stop it happening again

  • Unplug the HDMI cable before you move the console, even a little.
  • Leave some slack in the cable and keep it out of walkways.
  • Use a good quality, flexible HDMI cable, and avoid heavy adapters hanging from the port.
  • Plug consoles into a surge-protected power board.
  • If you have pets or young kids, consider laying the console flat so it can't be knocked over.
