Repair vs Replace: Why Fixing Your Phone Is Better for Your Wallet and the Planet

Technician repairing a phone instead of replacing it

When a phone screen cracks or the battery stops lasting the day, it's tempting to just buy a new one. But the greenest phone you can own is almost always the one already in your pocket. Repairing it saves money, saves resources, and keeps a working device out of landfill.

The hidden footprint of a new phone

Most of a smartphone's environmental impact happens before you ever turn it on. Phone makers' own product environmental reports show that manufacturing, including mining the metals, making the chips, and shipping, accounts for the large majority of a phone's lifetime carbon emissions. Charging it for years uses far less.

That means every extra year you keep a phone spreads that manufacturing footprint over a longer life. A study for the European Environmental Bureau estimated that keeping all smartphones in the EU in use for just one extra year would save about 2.1 million tonnes of CO₂ a year by 2030, roughly the same as taking a million cars off the road.

Australia's e-waste problem

Electronics are the fastest growing waste stream in the world. The Global E-waste Monitor 2024 found the world produced 62 million tonnes of e-waste in 2022, and only about 22% was properly collected and recycled. Phones are small, so they're easy to forget in a drawer or throw in the bin, but they contain valuable materials like gold, copper, cobalt, and lithium that take a lot of energy to mine.

What a repair actually replaces

A new screen or battery is a few grams of material. A new phone is the whole device, the box, the charger cable, and the shipping. Most common repairs take under 30 minutes:

  • Screen replacement fixes cracks, lines, and touch problems. See screen repairs for the iPhone 13 or Galaxy S23.
  • Battery replacement brings back full-day battery life for phones that are otherwise fine. See iPhone 12 battery replacement.
  • Charging port clean fixes most "won't charge" problems for $39–$49, often without replacing any parts at all.

Repair is cheaper too

One of our customers was told by another store their screen couldn't be fixed and they'd need a $1,499 phone. We replaced the screen for $270. That's the typical gap between a repair and a replacement, and you also skip the hassle of transferring data and setting up a new phone.

When repair makes sense, and when it doesn't

Repair is usually the right call when:

  • The phone still gets software and security updates
  • The fault is a screen, battery, charging port, camera, or back glass
  • The repair costs well under the price of a comparable phone

We'll be honest when it isn't worth it, for example a very old phone that no longer gets security updates, or damage that costs more to fix than the phone is worth. In that case, a certified refurbished phone is the next most sustainable option, because it gives an existing device a second life instead of making a new one.

Recycle what you can't repair

If a phone is truly finished, don't bin it. MobileMuster is Australia's free, government-accredited mobile phone recycling program, and it recovers the metals and plastics so they can be used again. Wipe your data first, or ask us to help you back it up and reset the phone.

How we keep repairs low-waste

  • We always try a professional port clean before replacing a charging port.
  • Our technicians repair at component level with microsoldering, so a single failed part doesn't mean a whole new board.
  • We offer three screen grades, so you can repair rather than replace even on a budget.
