Screens, batteries, and charging ports are the three repairs we do most at our Emu Plains store. They're also easy to mix up. A phone that won't turn on could have a dead screen, a flat battery, or a blocked charging port. Here's how to narrow it down before you book.
Signs you need a screen repair
- Cracked or shattered glass
- Lines, flickering, or coloured patches on the display
- Black spots or "ink" that spreads (common on OLED screens after a drop)
- Touch that doesn't respond in some areas, or the phone tapping by itself
- A black screen while the phone still rings, vibrates, or plays sound
That last one is the clue: if the phone is clearly on but you can't see anything, it's the screen, not the battery.
Signs you need a new battery
- The battery drains much faster than it used to
- The phone switches off at 20 or 30%
- It only works while plugged in
- It runs hot during light use
- The screen or back is lifting from the frame (a swollen battery, so stop charging it and bring it in)
On an iPhone, check Settings > Battery > Battery Health. Below about 80% maximum capacity is a worn battery. On a Samsung, use the Samsung Members app and run the battery status test under Phone diagnostics.
Signs you need a charging port repair
- The phone only charges at a certain angle
- The cable feels loose or falls out
- Charging starts and stops when you move the phone
- Your computer or car doesn't recognise the phone
Most of the time it isn't broken at all. Pocket lint gets packed into the port and stops the cable seating fully. A professional clean and realignment from $39–$49 fixes most of these. Please don't dig at it with a pin, which can bend the contacts and turn a clean into a replacement.
Quick test: port or battery?
If your phone supports wireless charging, put it on a wireless charger. If it charges wirelessly but not with a cable, the battery is fine and the port needs attention. If it won't charge either way, it may be the battery or a deeper fault, and we'll test both.
