Buying a Refurbished Phone? What "Certified Refurbished" Really Means

Certified refurbished iPhones on display

A refurbished phone can cost hundreds less than a new one and work just as well. It's also one of the most sustainable ways to get a phone, because it gives an existing device a second life instead of manufacturing a new one. But "refurbished" means different things to different sellers. Here's how to buy with confidence.

Refurbished vs second-hand vs new

  • Second-hand phones are sold as they are. Nobody may have checked the battery, the screen, or whether the phone is locked to someone else's account.
  • Refurbished phones have been inspected, tested, repaired where needed, cleaned, and reset before sale.
  • Certified refurbished phones go through a set multi-point inspection, so every device meets the same standard before it goes on sale.

What a proper refurbishment checks

  • Screen, touch, and display for dead pixels, lines, or burn-in
  • Battery health and charging
  • Cameras, microphones, speakers, and Face ID or fingerprint sensors
  • Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, mobile network, and SIM
  • Buttons, charging port, and water damage indicators
  • That the phone isn't locked to an account, blacklisted, or reported stolen
  • A full data wipe and fresh software install

How condition grades work

Grades describe how the phone looks, not how it works. Every certified refurbished device should work fully regardless of grade. Our grades are:

  • As New: looks barely used, with no marks you'd notice in normal light.
  • Excellent: light signs of use only, with faint hairline marks if you look closely.
  • Very Good: visible light scratches or small scuffs on the frame or back.
  • Good: noticeable scratches, scuffs, or small dents from everyday use. The cheapest way into a great phone if you use a case.

What to check before you buy

  1. Battery health. Ask what it is, or check it in settings after you buy. A worn battery can be replaced, but you should know before you pay.
  2. Software support. Choose a model that still gets security updates. Most iPhones from the last five to six years and recent Galaxy S and A models do.
  3. Network compatibility. Make sure it works on Australian networks and isn't locked to an overseas carrier.
  4. Warranty and returns. In Australia, refurbished goods are covered by the Australian Consumer Law, and a good seller will also offer their own warranty.
  5. Where it comes from. Buy from a business you can visit or contact, not an anonymous marketplace listing.

Why refurbished is the sustainable choice

Most of a phone's lifetime carbon footprint comes from making it. Buying refurbished avoids that footprint completely, keeps a working phone out of landfill, and still gets you a modern device. Pair it with a good case and screen protector, and it can easily last you several more years. Read more in why repair is better for the planet.

Upgrade or repair?

If your current phone has a cracked screen or tired battery, a repair might be all you need. If it's too old to get updates or the repair costs more than it's worth, a refurbished upgrade is often the better buy. We'll happily give you an honest opinion on both. One recent customer brought in a damaged Galaxy Note 10 for a quote and walked out with a refurbished Galaxy S23 Ultra, with their data transferred the next day.
