Dropped Your Phone in Water? What to Do First in Emu Plains and Penrith

Technician inspecting a phone circuit board after liquid damage

A spring storm over the Nepean, a phone left on the grass at a Glenmore Park oval, or a quick dunk near the river — October is when more wet phones start arriving at our Emu Plains workshop. What you do in the first hour matters more than the brand. Corrosion starts as soon as water meets the board, and plugging the phone in is the fastest way to turn a recoverable repair into a dead one.

Do this in the first few minutes

  1. Power it off and leave it off. If it is already off, do not turn it on to check whether it still works.
  2. Do not plug it in. Power and water together are what burn the tiny circuits. A phone that seemed fine ten minutes after a splash can be finished after one charge attempt.
  3. Take off the case and open the SIM tray so trapped water can drain. Pat the outside dry with a lint-free cloth. Do not shake it hard, and do not blow into the ports.
  4. Skip the rice, the hairdryer, and a hot car dashboard. Rice does not pull water off a circuit board. Heat can damage the battery and drive moisture further in.

If the phone fell into dirty water, the river, a drink, or the pool, mention that when you book. Those liquids leave residue that keeps corroding after the outside looks dry.

Why "it turned back on" is not the all-clear

Plenty of phones boot after a dunk and seem normal for a day or two. Moisture left on the board still turns into corrosion. It creeps across solder joints and can take out the charging circuit, the display, or the power chip days later. That is why a phone that "survived" on Monday can refuse to charge by the weekend.

Watch for these signs, even if they show up later:

  • It will not turn on, or it restarts by itself
  • The screen flickers, shows lines, or has fog under the glass
  • The speaker or microphone sounds muffled
  • Face ID, the camera, or the fingerprint sensor stops working
  • It gets hot, or the battery drops much faster than it used to
  • It will not charge, or it only charges when the cable sits at a certain angle

A charging fault on a dry phone is often just lint in the port. A professional charging port clean and realignment starts from $39–$49, and we try that before replacing a port. After liquid, do not keep testing cables. Bring the phone in so we can tell a dirty port from a wet board.

What a liquid-damage repair actually involves

At On the Spot Mobile Phone Repair Centre we open the device and inspect the board. The first step on a phone is an ultrasonic board clean and a corrosion check. That diagnostic is free, so you know what is recoverable before any paid component work starts. If we cannot repair it, you do not pay for the attempt. That is our no fix, no fee policy.

Where corrosion has already eaten a part, we repair at component level with microsoldering rather than writing the phone off. Screens, batteries, and charging ports are still replaced when those parts themselves are the problem. Most of those jobs are finished the same day, with a 12-month warranty. Liquid on the board can take longer, because the phone has to be cleaned and tested before it goes home.

The same care applies to iPads and MacBooks. A splash across a keyboard or a drink over a trackpad is a logic-board job. We ultrasonically clean the board, remove corrosion, and then test what still needs replacing. If the machine is unrecoverable, you do not pay for the attempt.

What not to try at home

  • Do not open the phone and wipe the board unless you already do this work. A wipe in the wrong place can tear a flex cable or spread the liquid.
  • Do not charge a device if the screen or back is lifting. A swollen battery is a fire risk. Power it off and bring it straight in.
  • Do not factory-reset a wet phone hoping a glitch will clear. Liquid damage is a hardware problem, not a settings problem.

Bring it to the Emu Plains workshop

We are at Shop 7, Lennox Village, on the corner of the Great Western Highway and Pyramid Street in Emu Plains. Customers come across the river from Penrith and Jamisontown, down from Glenmore Park and Kingswood, along from St Marys, and down the mountains from Leonay, Lapstone, Blaxland, and Springwood. You only need the device. Call 0420 739 151, or book a water-damage diagnostic and we will tell you what is worth repairing before any work starts.
