iPad Not Ready for Term 4? Screen, Battery, and Charging Repairs in Emu Plains

Cracked device screen on a green repair mat

NSW Term 4 starts for students on Tuesday 13 October. The spring holidays are over, and iPads go back into school bags across Emu Plains, Penrith, Glenmore Park, Kingswood, St Marys, Blaxland, Springwood, Leonay, Lapstone, and Jamisontown. If the break left a cracked screen, a battery that dies before the last lesson, or a cable that only charges when you hold it at an angle, this is the week to fix it.

On the Spot Mobile Phone Repair Centre, at Shop 7, Lennox Village, sees the same three iPad faults every time a term begins. Here is how to tell them apart, what you can check at home, and what we do in the workshop.

A cracked screen gets worse in a school bag

A cracked iPad is easy to ignore when the picture still looks fine. The glass goes back in the bag next to a lunchbox, a drink bottle, and a laptop. The next bump runs the crack further. Sharp edges can cut a finger. Touch starts missing taps, which matters when a student is writing or drawing in class. Putting a screen protector over broken glass does not hold the damage in, and it can hide how far the crack has already travelled.

We replace iPad glass in three grades, so you can match the repair to how the tablet is used:

  • Original screens are the factory-spec option: the colour, brightness, and touch the iPad had when it was new.
  • Soft OLED / premium screens are high-grade flexible panels for a result close to original.
  • In-Cell LCD screens are the budget option, with reliable everyday use, solid touch, and a standard picture.

Each grade is labelled before you book, and the live price for your model is in the booking tool. We don't publish one screen price for every iPad, because a standard iPad and an iPad Pro are different jobs. Most tablet repairs are finished the same day, with a 12-month warranty on parts and labour. Grades and booking for the Pro models are on our iPad Pro repair page.

A battery that will not last a school day

Battery trouble shows up as soon as the day gets long. The iPad might be near empty by lunch, shut down while it still shows charge, or run hot inside a case on a desk. That is a worn cell, not a sign that a child is simply using the tablet too much.

A swollen battery is a different problem. If the screen is lifting, the case is splitting, or the iPad rocks on a flat table, stop charging it and bring it in. Do not press the screen back down or keep it in a tight case. A swollen cell is a safety issue.

On most iPads we see, a battery replacement is straightforward. We fit a quality cell, check that it charges and holds power, and cover the work with the same 12-month warranty. If the rest of the tablet is fine, a new battery is usually a better result than buying another iPad in the first week of term.

It might be the charging port, not the battery

Charging faults are the problems parents most often mistake for a dead battery. Try another cable and wall adaptor first. A frayed lead causes the same symptoms, and a spare cable is a cheaper test than a repair.

If a known-good cable still drops out, or you have to wiggle it before the charging icon appears, look in the port. Pocket lint, crumbs, and dust pack into the socket and stop the plug seating. That is the most common charging fault we see, on iPads and on phones.

Our technicians start with a professional charging port clean and mechanical realignment, from $39–$49, before recommending a full port replacement. A clean is enough for many iPads, and it avoids the cost of a new port. If the socket itself is broken or loose, we replace it. You see the price in the booking tool before any work starts. If we can't fix it, you don't pay for the attempt.

What to do before you come in

  1. Back up. Use iCloud or a computer so photos and school files are safe before the iPad is opened.
  2. Know the passcode. We use it to test touch, brightness, and charging after the repair.
  3. Take off a thick case so the tablet can be opened without delay.
  4. Bring the cable you normally use, especially if charging is the fault. It tells us whether the lead or the iPad port is the problem.

You do not need a booking. Walk-ins are welcome, and reserving a time is useful in a busy back-to-school week so you are not waiting while class is on.
