MacBook Won't Turn On During the HSC? What to Check in Emu Plains

Technician microsoldering a MacBook logic board

NSW HSC written exams started on Tuesday 13 October 2026 and run through Thursday 5 November. For students in Emu Plains, Penrith, Glenmore Park, Kingswood, St Marys, Blaxland, Springwood, Leonay, Lapstone, and Jamisontown, a MacBook often holds the notes and past papers. If it will not turn on the night before an exam, the first job is to work out which fault you actually have. A dark screen, a dead battery, and liquid damage need different repairs.

On the Spot Mobile Phone Repair Centre, at Shop 7, Lennox Village, does MacBook Air and MacBook Pro logic-board work in Emu Plains. Here is what to check at home, and what we look at in the workshop.

Start with the charger, not the screwdriver

A MacBook that looks dead is often a power problem you can rule out in a few minutes. Plug in the charger that came with the laptop, or another charger you know works, and try a different wall socket. A loose USB-C cable or a tired adaptor can look exactly like a dead computer. If the MagSafe light, the battery icon, or a charging sound appears, the board is getting power and the problem is further along.

Leave the case on the table. Do not open the bottom cover, and do not pour rice or leave the MacBook on a heater. Those steps do not dry a board, and they can bend a connector or crack the display before anyone has diagnosed it.

A black screen is not always a dead MacBook

Listen before you decide the laptop is gone. If you hear a fan, a chime, or keyboard backlight, the MacBook is trying to start and the picture is the part that failed. That is a display or backlight fault. Cracked glass, a white glow with no image, or a picture that only appears when you tilt the lid are the usual signs.

If there is no fan, no light, and no response to the power button even with a known-good charger, treat it as a no-power fault. That can be the battery, a power rail on the logic board, or corrosion from an earlier spill. The outside can look perfect. The fault is under the board.

Backlight and display faults are a different job from a MacBook that will not turn on at all. Naming the symptom when you book saves a round of guessing.

Liquid in a school bag keeps damaging the board

A drink bottle in the same bag as the laptop is the spill we see most often around exam time. The MacBook may work for a day, then shut off and refuse to start. Liquid creeps under chips and leaves corrosion that spreads while the laptop sits in a bag.

If anything wet has been near it, switch it off and stop charging it. Charging a wet board can turn a small fault into a larger one. Do not keep pressing keys to test it, and do not put it in front of a hair dryer. Bring it in so the board can be opened, cleaned, and checked.

Our liquid-damage board repair starts with a look at the board, an ultrasonic clean, and a corrosion check. If we cannot fix it, you do not pay for the attempt. That is the same no fix, no fee promise as the rest of the workshop.

What the workshop actually does

A lot of shops stop when a MacBook has no power or no display and tell you to replace it. Board-level repair is why students from Penrith and the lower Blue Mountains bring them to Lennox Village. On MacBook Air and MacBook Pro we do four jobs:

  • Microsoldering diagnostic. Board-level troubleshooting before any component work, so you know what failed.
  • No-power and dead-board repair. Power-rail diagnosis for a MacBook that will not turn on.
  • Liquid-damage board repair. Clean and corrosion check after a spill.
  • Backlight and display repair. For a MacBook that starts but shows no picture. We also replace MacBook Air and MacBook Pro display assemblies when the glass itself is cracked and the laptop still turns on.

Live prices for your model are in the booking tool. We confirm the price before any work starts. Every completed repair is covered by a 12-month warranty on parts and labour. Screen, battery, and charging-port jobs on phones are usually finished the same day. A logic board can take longer than a screen, because the board has to be tested after the repair, not just reassembled. The full list is on our MacBook logic board repair page.

Bring it in before the next paper

Written exams continue until 5 November. If the MacBook failed tonight, do not spend the evening taking it apart. Note three things: any sign of liquid, whether a charger light comes on, and whether you hear a fan. That is enough for us to start.

On the Spot Mobile Phone Repair Centre is at Shop 7, Lennox Village, Cnr Great Western Highway & 1 Pyramid St, Emu Plains NSW 2750. The workshop is open seven days, with a later close on Thursday. Call 0420 739 151, or book a diagnostic. We will tell you the price before we start, and if we cannot fix it, you do not pay.
