A PlayStation DualSense or Xbox controller that moves the camera on its own, or dies halfway through a game, is one of the most common console jobs at On the Spot Mobile Phone Repair Centre. With school back, a tired pad is easy to ignore until the weekend. If the character walks without you touching the stick, or the controller only charges when the cable is held at an angle, you can usually tell which part has failed before you leave Emu Plains.
At our store in Shop 7, Lennox Village, this is the same check we walk through at the counter. You only need to bring the controller.
Signs of stick drift
Stick drift means the game reacts when your thumb is off the stick. These are the patterns we see on DualSense and Xbox controllers from Emu Plains, Penrith, and nearby suburbs:
- The camera slowly turns while the controller sits on a table
- Your character walks, looks up, or aims to one side on its own
- Menus scroll without a touch
- One direction feels mushy, or the stick does not spring back to the centre
- It shows up in more than one game
A firmware update or a stick recalibration can hide a mild case for a few days. It does not repair worn contacts inside the stick module. If the drift comes back, the module needs replacing. Blowing into the stick does not fix those contacts, and moisture can make the drift worse.
Signs it is the charging port or the battery
Drift and charging problems often show up together. They are different repairs.
The charging port is the likely fault when:
- It only charges at an angle
- The cable feels loose or falls out
- Charging starts and stops when the cable moves
- A cable that charges your phone will not seat properly in the controller
The battery is the likely fault when:
- It used to last a long session and now needs a charge every night
- It dies suddenly while the light still shows charge
- It runs warm during ordinary play, not only while it is plugged in
Pocket lint packs into a controller port the same way it packs into a phone. We start with a professional clean and realignment, from $39–$49, before we recommend a new port. Please do not dig in the port with a pin or a toothpick. That bends the contacts and turns a clean into a replacement.
Three checks before you book
- Test the stick with your hands off. Rest the controller on a flat surface, open a game, and take your hands away. If the camera still moves, that stick is drifting. A second game rules out one title's settings.
- Try another cable, then the console's USB port. If the controller charges on one cable only when you hold it, the port is the likely fault. If it will not hold a charge on any cable, we test the battery next.
- Note which stick. Left and right modules are replaced separately. Tell us which side drifts, and whether the fault is drift, charging, or both, so the repair matches the controller you bring in.
What the repair includes
For stick drift, we replace the analog stick module on DualSense and Xbox controllers. That is the part with the worn contacts. When the fault is charging, a port clean comes first. If the port is damaged, or the battery no longer holds a session, we replace that part and test it. The price depends on the controller and the fault, and we confirm it before any work starts.
Most controller repairs are finished the same day. Every completed repair has a 12-month warranty on parts and labour. Booking online saves $10 per repair. If we cannot fix it, you do not pay for the attempt. You can walk in with no appointment, or book a time and we will have the job ready when you arrive.
See DualSense controller repair and Xbox controller repair for the jobs we do on each pad. If the console powers on but the TV says no signal, that is a different fault. Our guide to PS5 and Xbox HDMI port repair covers that one.
How to make the next sticks last
- Do not leave the controller in a hot car or on a windowsill. Warm spring days around Emu Plains and Penrith are enough to stress a tired battery
- Unplug the cable by the plug, not by pulling the lead
- Keep food and drink off the sticks. Grit around the stick housing is a common reason a pad feels rough before the module fails
- Store it so the sticks are not pressed down in a bag
- If drift has already started, do not spray contact cleaner into the stick. It can spread the wear, and it is not a lasting fix
