Term 4 is busy around Emu Plains and Penrith, and a lot of phones on the counter have the same complaint. You can hear the other person. They say you sound far away, or a voice memo for school or sport comes out dull. Music still plays, so it is easy to blame the other handset. On an iPhone, the fault is often in the charging port.
At On the Spot Mobile Phone Repair Centre, Shop 7, Lennox Village, a blocked or damaged port is one of the first things we check before anyone replaces a phone that otherwise works.
Hear them, but they cannot hear you
These are different faults, and they point to different parts.
- You cannot hear callers, or music is quiet at your ear, but speakerphone is loud. That is usually the earpiece at the top of the phone.
- You hear callers clearly, but they cannot hear you, and a voice memo sounds muffled on speaker. That is a microphone.
- Both sides sound bad after a splash or a dunk. That is liquid in the openings. Read what to do after water damage, and do not keep charging a wet phone to test the call.
Record about ten seconds in a quiet room with Bluetooth headphones disconnected, then play it on speaker. If your voice is thin or crackly, the microphone that made the recording is the problem. If the memo is clear and only one person cannot hear you, try a second call before you book.
Why an iPhone charging port affects calls
On an iPhone, the charging port is built into a flex cable at the bottom of the phone, and that cable also carries the bottom microphone. Ordinary calls and voice memos use that mic. If the port is damaged, replacing the flex fixes charging and can also fix muffled calls or voice memos. The usual clue is both faults at once: the cable only charges at an angle, it feels loose, or the phone says the accessory is not supported, and people cannot hear you.
A Galaxy is different. On most Galaxy phones the USB-C port sits on a small board at the bottom and can be replaced on its own. A muffled microphone on a Samsung still needs a look, but it is not automatically the same part as the port. Tell us the model when you book.
Checks worth doing at home
- Take the case off. A thick case, a low grip, or a car mount over the bottom edge can cover the microphone grille. Record another memo with the case off. We see this through spring sport and on the drive along the Great Western Highway.
- Look, and do not dig. Lint from a school bag or sports pocket packs into the port and stops the cable seating. A pin, paper clip, or compressed air can bend the contacts or push the lint further in, and a $39–$49 clean becomes a replacement.
- Try a cable you trust. A frayed cable looks like a bad port. If a good cable charges normally and the memo is still muffled with the case off, we will test the microphone on the same visit.
- Note when it started. A drop, a new case, or a dusty sports bag are the common October stories. After a drink or a dunk, stop testing cables and bring the phone in.
What the repair includes
We inspect the port under magnification and test it with a known-good cable. If it is lint or debris, we clean and realign the port, from $39–$49. Most phones are charging properly again in minutes. If the port itself is damaged, we replace it. On an iPhone that is the charging flex, so the loose cable and the bottom microphone are handled together. Most replacements are finished the same day when the part is in stock. We test charging, data, and the microphones before you leave.
The price depends on the model. It is listed before you book, it includes parts and labour, and we confirm it before any work starts. Booking online saves $10 per repair. The repair has a 12-month warranty on parts and labour. If we cannot fix the phone, you do not pay for the attempt. We still recommend a backup before any repair.
If you cannot hear callers, say so when you book. On an iPhone the earpiece sits with the sensors at the top. During a screen repair we move those parts across so calls and Face ID work as before. We will say which repair you need, and the price, before we start.
